Dreaded family Sundays. Parents-in-Law swooping in on the grandchildren and wiping out their parents. Critical observations and attitudes that never cease, fueling anger and the utterance of words that cannot be withdrawn.

In working with GenRenu we and our clients will focus on creating a space that allows for family members across the generations to spend time together in a natural way, one that is free from the often toxic, dysfunctional and emotionally intolerable levels of interaction that have plagued the past.

Ruptures require repairs. Repair requires acceptance. In a family oriented form of Acceptance Therapy, grown children, their in-laws, and their parents across the generational divide start by accepting limits on their own behaviors, especially judgmental and critical opinions. In other words they work to accept their differences. They accept the fact of a family member’s difference while not attacking him or her and hence open the space to a form of “co- existence”. You may not like the reality of a family member but you can let them be. Together we help you define and create a “conflict-free zone”: a space where the air that is breathed is peaceful, and one in which half-day or whole day visits can actually allow the grandchildren to be themselves around a set of adults who love them. This effort is one that in the end builds healing and self-repair.
